On 90th Anniversary Of Social Security, Schatz Joins AARP Hawai‘i To Celebrate Its Success, Recommit To Protecting, Strengthening Critical Program That Seniors Rely On

Schatz: Social Security Is The Most Effective Anti-Poverty Program In American History

HONOLULU – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) today joined members of the Hawai‘i congressional delegation, AARP Hawai‘i staff and volunteers, and local seniors to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security. At an event organized by AARP Hawai‘i at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Schatz underscored his longstanding support for Social Security and emphasized its importance in supporting seniors and families across Hawai‘i.

“For 90 years, Social Security has proven to be the most effective anti-poverty program in American history,” said Senator Schatz. “Social Security is a lifeline for seniors and disabled people throughout our state, and I’ll always fight to protect and strengthen the benefits they’ve earned and deserve.”

Schatz has led legislation in the Senate to protect and expand Social Security. The Safeguarding American Families and Expanding Social Security (SAFE Social Security) Act will increase benefits on average by more than $125 per month, ensure the cost of living adjustments adequately reflect the living expenses of retirees, extend the life of the trust fund, remove the wage cap to make sure all Americans contribute equally, and provide additional benefits to older seniors, caregivers, and low-income Americans.
