Schatz Announces Internship Program Aimed at Hawai`i High School Seniors

Honolulu, HI—Today, Senator Brian Schatz announced that his office is launching a new Hawai‘i high school internship program known as “Schatz Seniors.”  Hawai‘i high school seniors interested in serving as 2013-14 interns for the Hawai‘i office may apply beginning August 15, 2013. The Senator will select 15 interns for this inaugural class.

“Through this program, we hope to provide a hands-on learning opportunities about the U.S. Senate, spark a dialogue between myself and students about their concerns,  and encourage students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities,” said Senator Schatz.  “I am looking forward to kicking off this program, and hope that it will continue for years to come. By collaborating with the younger generation of Hawai‘i students, we can all work to build a better future for our state.”

Public, private, charter and homeschool seniors from every island may apply.  Interns will work in Hawai‘i with Honolulu office staff and neighbor island outreach staff.

Activities will involve working with outreach staff on community visits with the Senator, identifying issues of interest in their school and community, attending and staffing special events and Issue Summits co-hosted by the Senator.  This is not an office position and students should miss little class time.

To apply, students must have a GPA of 2.0 or better and complete the application. Interns must have personal access to email throughout the internship. Interns will be selected based on their involvement in their community, diversity of interests and life experiences, and demonstrated leadership involvement. Knowledge of U.S. Senate or national policymaking is not required.
