Schatz Co-Sponsors Bill To Permanently Protect Phrase "GI Bill" From Abuse

Washington, DC—Today, Senator Brian Schatz joined Senators Boxer, Harkin, Franken and Mikulski in sponsoring the GI Bill Protection Act. This legislation would provide the same protection for the phrase “GI Bill” already enjoyed by other governmental terms, such as “Medicare” and “Social Security,” by restricting the use of the phrase without permission from the Veteran Affairs Secretary. Passage of this legislation would permanently ban the inappropriate and misleading use of the phrase “GI Bill” in the marketing materials of for-profit colleges or universities.

“This bill protects veterans from bad actors who use the term ‘GI Bill’ to unfairly target veterans through deceptive and predatory marketing,” said Senator Brian Schatz. “With thousands of men and women returning home from overseas to pursue their educations, the government should extend protections where it can to prevent fraud and misrepresentation by the for-profit school industry. These men and women in uniform are heroes who deserve to pursue their educations without outside hindrance. I am proud to join my Senate colleagues in support of this bill.”
