Senator Brian Schatz is hiring a legislative staffer to advise the senator on housing, transportation, and disaster policy, and a handful of other related topics in the infrastructure space. This staffer will lead the senator’s work on housing supply, transportation and infrastructure needs, including Maui fire recovery, and other related topics. And, as applicable, this staffer will support the senator as a member of the Appropriations Committee—working closely with the senator’s state and Appropriations coordination teams. Highly competitive candidates will have significant congressional and/or governmental work experience as well as a graduate or law degree. Experience in housing policy and/or connections to Hawaii are preferred but not required. The salary for this position will be in the range of $80,000-$95,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this position include:
- leading on the senator’s housing, transportation, disaster, and related policy work
- advancing the senator’s existing initiatives and developing new priorities
- preparing for committee hearings and markups, and staffing the senator at those meetings
- supporting the senator’s appropriations work
- conducting oversight of federal agencies
- coordinating with all components of the office to support the senator’s work
- addressing external requests and representing the office with public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.
Experience and Skills
The successful applicant will have all or many of the following:
- significant experience in and knowledge of the relevant policy areas
- demonstrated experience in developing new policies and drafting legislation
- understanding of relevant federal agencies, including their budgets, programs, and policy processes
- experience advancing policy in coordination with state and local agencies
- show creativity and the ability to craft innovative approaches to challenges
- highly motivated and results-oriented • excellent written and oral communication skills
- possess outstanding analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills
- work well as part of a team • show consistent and significant attention to detail
- experience with coalition building and policy messaging
Start Date
This position is available to start as soon as possible.
Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for this position will be within the range of $80,000-$95,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
