Senator Brian Schatz seeks a legislative assistant to staff the senator’s work on judiciary-related topics (including antitrust, civil rights, criminal justice, gun control, immigration, intellectual property, and judicial nominations) as well as economic-related topics (banking, economic development). This position will also help support the senator’s work as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and its subcommittee on DOJ and related agencies. Competitive candidates will have significant congressional experience—with executive branch work experience a plus. This legislative assistant will join the senator’s domestic policy team and report to his general counsel. The salary for this position will be in the range of $80,000 – $95,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
- advancing the senator’s existing initiatives and developing new priorities in the judiciary and economic policy;
- supporting the senator’s appropriations work;
- advising the senator on a broad portfolio of domestic policy topics;
- conducting oversight of federal agencies;
- helping prepare for Appropriations Committee hearings and markups and staffing the senator at those meetings;
- coordinating with all components of the office to support the senator’s priorities; and
- addressing external requests and representing the office with public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.
Experience and Skills
The successful applicant will have many of the following:
- have experience working on the congressional appropriations process;
- have experience in and knowledge of a variety of relevant domestic policy topics;
- have demonstrable experience in developing new policies and drafting legislation;
- understand relevant federal agencies, including their budgets, programs, and policy processes;
- show creativity and the ability to craft innovative responses and solutions;
- be highly motivated and results-oriented;
- have excellent written and oral communication skills;
- possess outstanding analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills;
- be collaborative, transparent, and work well as part of a team;
- show consistent and significant attention to detail;
- have experience with coalition building and policy messaging; and
- have a law or graduate degree (preferred but not required).
Location
The position is based in the senator’s Washington, DC, office but some travel to Hawaii is required.
Start Date
This position will start as soon as possible.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position will be in the range of $80,000 – $95,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
