Senator Brian Schatz seeks a Staff Assistant for his Honolulu, Hawai‘i office. The Hawai‘i Staff Assistant supports the office’s front desk, outreach activities, and communications team.
Responsibilities
The Hawai‘i Staff Assistant’s primary responsibilities are:
- Drafting, editing, and proofreading materials sent out on behalf of the Senator;
- Answering phone calls and directing inquiries, including identifying recurring topics for the legislative and communications teams;
- Greeting and directing visitors to the office;
- Helping manage constituent requests;
- Supporting the planning and execution of outreach activities;
- Assisting with press-related tasks; and
- Other general office tasks.
Experience and Skills
The successful applicant will:

- have excellent communications skills;
- have strong Hawai‘i ties and a significant understanding of local culture, people, and places;
- be organized;
- be adaptable;
- work well in a team; and
- welcome feedback.
Desired skills include:
- customer service experience; and/or
- digital or communications work.
This is a full-time position, and training will be provided for the right candidate. While a demonstrated interest in public service is appreciated, previous experience in government is not a requirement.

Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for this position is $53,150 per year. U.S. Senate employees are eligible for a number of benefits including student loan repayment, employer contribution for health care insurance, retirement plans, life insurance, and personal and professional development courses.
