2025 Republican Tax Law

On July 4, 2025 the President signed legislation into law that institutes major changes to Medicaid (Hawaii Med-QUEST), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Federal Student Loans. These changes include new eligibility requirements that will make it more difficult for people to continue accessing these services.

More information about how you may be impacted and how to get help is available here.

Vaccine Access

The administration is changing vaccine recommendations which may impact your access to critical vaccines. Vaccines are available at pharmacies, clinics, and doctor’s offices.  Please note that depending on your health status, pharmacies may now require a doctor’s prescription.

Resources for Vaccines

  • If you have questions about which vaccines you should receive, please contact your doctor.
  • For more information about immunizations in Hawai‘i, you can call the Hawai‘i Department of Health Immunization Branch at 1-808-586-8300. If you are uninsured, the Hawai‘i Department of Health may have information about accessing vaccines, including at a nearby community health center.

Federal Funding Freeze

The current administration recently moved to block at least $430 billion in federal funding owed to people in Hawai‘i and across the country. A tracker estimating the amount of federal funding that is currently canceled or frozen nationwide is available here.

The tracker offers a snapshot-in-time look at the vast array of federal funding that should be going out the door, but that the current administration is holding up or actively fighting in court to block. It details the minimum amount of funding we believe the administration is currently withholding for key priorities like public safety, medical research, recovery from natural disasters, child care, transportation, and more.

If you have been impacted by these attempts to stop federal funding from flowing to Hawai‘i, we want to hear from you. Share your story and request assistance here.

On July 1, 2025, the administration abruptly blocked the release of nearly $7 billion in federal funding for K-12 schools and adult literacy programs in Hawai‘i and across the country. Following the announcement, Senator Schatz joined several of his Democratic colleagues in calling on the administration to stop blocking the funds. On July 25, 2025, the administration announced it would end the illegal withholdings and release the funding.
