Schatz Statement On Twitter Policy Banning Political Ads

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), lead Democrat on the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet, released the following statement on Twitter’s decision to ban all political advertisements.

“Twitter’s new policy to stop all political ads is strong, but it’s not the only solution. Online platforms, including Facebook, can simply refuse to run ads with blatant lies. This is not a new concept. Facebook already monitors and regulates falsehoods in ads – the only group exempt is people who run for office. Politicians should not be free to lie. We know information shared online can impact our elections and our democracy. It’s time online platforms take this threat seriously and implement commonsense measures to stop the spread of false information.”
