Senator Brian Schatz seeks a legislative aide to staff the senator’s work on foreign policy and will support the senator’s work as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.  Competitive candidates will have congressional with executive branch work experience considered a plus.  This legislative aide will join the senator’s national security team and report to his national security advisor.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position include:

  • advising the senator on foreign policy topics;
  • advancing the senator’s existing initiatives and developing new priorities;
  • helping prepare for committee hearings and markups and staff the senator at those meetings;
  • conducting oversight of federal agencies;
  • supporting the senator’s appropriations work;
  • supporting the senator’s national security advisor;
  • coordinating with all components of the office to support the senator’s priorities; and
  • addressing external requests and representing the office with public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.

Experience and Skills

The successful applicant will have all or many of the following:

  • have significant experience in and knowledge of U.S. foreign policy and strategy, including tools such as foreign assistance;
  • have demonstrable experience in developing new policies and drafting legislation;
  • understand relevant federal agencies, including their budgets, programs, and policy processes;
  • show creativity and the ability to craft innovative approaches to challenges;
  • be highly motivated and results-oriented;
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • possess outstanding analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills;
  • be collaborative, transparent, and work well as part of a team;
  • show consistent and significant attention to detail;
  • have experience with coalition building and policy messaging;
  • have expertise working on Indo-Pacific issues (strongly preferred but not required); and
  • have a graduate degree (strongly preferred but not required).

Location

The position is based in the senator’s Washington, DC, office but travel to Honolulu will sometimes be needed.

Start Date

This position will start as soon as possible.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position will be in the range of $55,000-$65,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
