Senator Brian Schatz seeks a legislative aide to staff the senator’s work on judiciary and domestic policy issues, including antitrust, census, civil rights, criminal justice, gun control, immigration, intellectual property, social issues, and judiciary policy issues generally.  This also includes staffing the senator’s judiciary work as a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science.  Competitive candidates will have significant congressional and executive branch work experience.  This legislative aide will join the senator’s domestic policy team and report to his general counsel.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position include:

  • advising the senator on judiciary and domestic policy topics;
  • advancing the senator’s existing initiatives and developing new priorities;
  • helping prepare for relevant CJS committee hearings and markups and staff the senator at those meetings;
  • conducting oversight of federal agencies;
  • supporting the senator’s appropriations work;
  • coordinating with all components of the office to support the senator’s priorities; and
  • addressing external requests and representing the office with public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.

Experience and Skills

The successful applicant will have many of the following:

  • have experience in and knowledge of judiciary and domestic policy topics;
  • have demonstrable experience in developing new policies and drafting legislation;
  • understand relevant federal agencies, including their budgets, programs, and policy processes;
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • possess outstanding analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills;
  • be collaborative, transparent, and work well as part of a team;
  • show consistent and significant attention to detail;
  • have experience with coalition building and policy messaging; and
  • have a law or graduate degree (strongly preferred but not required).

Location

The position is based in the senator’s Washington, DC, office but travel to Honolulu will sometimes be needed.

Start Date

This position will start as soon as possible.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position will be in the range of $55,000-$65,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
